Plus qu'à l'image elle-même, c'est à l'endroit de l'apparition de l'œuvre que l'art d'Yves Schemoul travaille. Comment l'œil perçoit-il l'image? À quel moment la trace fait-elle signe? Quel rapport la couleur entretient-elle avec le support sur laquelle elle est disposée. Comment la nature d'un papier, son grain, sa fibre, détermine-t-elle la nature d'une représentation? C'est aux marges de l'image mais au cœur de ce qui fait le regard que l'œuvre d'Yves Schemoul agit. Manipulant ses supports, usant notamment de la sérigraphie, de la photographie, de la peinture autant que de l'accident (trace, coulure...) l'artiste met en place une œuvre d'une grande précision qui s'attache finalement à ce qui fait l'origine de l'art, à savoir, la question de sa réception, de la perception.

Yves Schemoul’s art works more in the direction of the appearance of the work, than on the image itself. How does the eye perceive the image? At what moment does the trace beckon? What relation does colour have with the medium on which it is applied? How does the type of paper, its grain and its fibre, determine the nature of a representation? It is on the sidelines of the image but at the heart of what makes up our way of looking at things that Yves Schemoul’s work acts. By manipulating his media, and in particular using silkscreening, photography and painting as much as accident (trace, streak), the artist sets up an extremely precise oeuvre which, when all is said and done, focuses on what makes the origin of art, to wit, the issue of how it is received, and perceived.
