L’Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Arts de Paris-Cergy a le plaisir d’annoncer The Hidden, une exposition monographique de l’artiste Salvatore Arancio qui sera présentée dans son espace d’exposition YGREC, du 4 octobre au 13 décembre 2014. Ce projet constitue pour l’artiste sa première exposition personnelle dans une institution publique française.

Il fait suite à une résidence que l’artiste a effectuée à l’automne dernier aux Récollets, lors de laquelle il est parti explorer le Jardin d’Agronomie Tropical de Nogent-Sur-Marne. Il y a notamment découvert les archives de l’exposition coloniale de 1907 et les vestiges des expérimentations agronomiques menées par un groupe de scientifiques : particulièrement, le développement d’espèces de plantes exotiques cultivées dans le but de les exporter et de les implanter dans les colonies françaises pour en développer leur production de masse. Les expositions coloniales de 1907 et 1931 avaient pour objectif de présenter au public français les modes de vie des communautés des colonies françaises de l’époque, Indochine, Afrique, ou encore Tunisie, que les organisateurs avaient spécifiquement fait venir et installées dans leurs pavillons respectifs ; comme une sorte d’environnements « typiques » recrées au cœur du jardin. Aujourd’hui, une partie des villages reconstitués est toujours en place, mais les bâtisses, barricadées et interdites à la visite, tombent presque toutes en ruine.

Au delà de l’histoire coloniale que ce jardin impose, c’est ce paysage à la vision apocalyptique, au croisement d’une nature envahissante et d’architectures désuètes, qui a en premier lieu fasciné l’artiste ; en somme, une rencontre du réel et de l’imaginaire confinée dans un espace physique donné, que Foucault qualifiait d’"Hétérotopie".

A YGREC, il est proposé au public de découvrir un décor à cheval entre imaginaire et réel, un jardin symbolique de ces utopies et réalités, qui figera ces rencontres dans une surface tangible où Arancio a pour intention de produire de toutes nouvelles pièces au cœur d’une installation ambitieuse qui investira tout l’espace de la galerie. Souhaitant recréer une partie du jardin et des serres de l’époque, l’artiste, un peu à la manière de l’illusion donnée au public du début du vingtième siècle, donnera au public d’aujourd’hui l’illusion d’entrer dans un environnement qui dans une donnée spatio-temporelle n’est pas ou plus. Ses nouvelles œuvres, réalisées autour d'une multitude de médias (film Super8, céramique, sculptures) prendront directement source dans sa fascination pour les ruines modernes, ainsi que dans son enquête sur la façon dont le colonialisme français a subtilement influencé et modifié le paysage de ses colonies.

Né en 1974 à Catania (Italie), Salvatore Arancio est diplômé d’un Master Fine Arts Photography du Royal College of Arts. Il a grandi en Sicile et vie et travaille à Londres depuis de nombreuses années. Il a récemment réalisé et participé à diverses expositions (personnelles ou collectives) : Cathedral, AV Festival, Nothern Gallery For Contemporary Art, Sunderland, Royaume-Uni, (2014); Curiosity: Art & the Pleasure of Knowing, Hayward Touring, Royaume-Uni (2013);  Cyclorama, Museo Tamayo Arte Contemporáneo, Mexico City, Mexico (2013); “Alternating Layers of Contrasting Resistance”, Rowing, Londres, Royaume-Uni, (2013); “Solo Project”, Art Rotterdam, Rotterdam, (2013); “The Little Man of the Forest With the Big Hat”, Federica Schiavo Gallery, Rome, Italie, (2013). Expositions à venir: Off(icielle), Cité de la Mode et du Design, Paris (22-26 Octobre 2014); Projection de "Birds" dans le cadre de Cinéphémère, FIAC, Paris (22-26 Octobre 2014); Solo show au Centre d'art contemporain La Halle des bouchers, Vienne, France (Mai 2015). Il est représenté par la galerie Federica Schiavo, Rome.

The Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Arts de Paris-Cergy is pleased to announce The Hidden, a solo exhibition by the artist Salvatore Arancio which will take place in its exhibition space YGREC from 4th October until 6th December 2014. This major project constitutes for the artist his first solo exhibition organised by a public institution in France.

It directly  follows on from a residency he did at the Récollets in Paris in the course of the Autumn 2013 where he started to explore the Jardin d’Agronomie Tropical in Nogent-Sur-Marne. There, he discovered fascinating archive material dating from the colonial exhibition which took place in 1907, along with relics of the agronomical experimentations that were led by a group of scientists: particularly the growing of species of plants which led to the mass introduction of exotic florae across French colonies. The colonial exhibitions of 1907 and 1931 were organised in view of offering visitors an opportunity to take a glimpse into the life of unknown communities (Indochina, Africa, Tunisia), where they could come and observe the autochthons in their respective national pavilions in the middle of recreated "typical" environments. Today some of the original villages are still in place but the buildings, fenced off from visitors, have all almost completely collapsed.

More than the imposing colonial history the garden still holds, the artist firstly became fascinated by the apocalyptic vision naturally fueled by the surrounding landscape, subtly interweaving overgrown nature and uncanny pieces of architecture; in brief, the encounter of the real and the imaginary confined in a physical delimited space, which Foucault would define as “Hétérotopie”.

At YGREC, the public will be given the opportunity to discover a landscape that sits in-between the imaginary and the real, a symbolic garden reminiscent of utopias and realities. Simultaneaously bringing these encounters to a halt, Arancio aims to produce a new body of work in an ambitious installation which will surround the entire space.

Recreating part of the garden and the greenhouses, the artist, in the same way people at the beginning of the 20th Century were given the illusion to travel to exotic places, will give the public of today the illusion to enter in an environment which in a time-space dimension has ceased to exist. Using an array of media including a Super 8  film, ceramics, sculpture and prints, Arancio will directly take inspiration from both his fascination with modern ruins and his investigation in the way French colonialism has subtly influenced and altered the landscape of its colonies.

Born in 1974 in Catania (Italy), Salvatore Arancio graduated with an MA Fine Arts Photography from the Royal College of Art (UK).
