Ateliers Médicis in cooperation with Centre national des arts plastiques (CNAP) is leading a national photographic commission titled Regards du Grand Paris. Launched in 2016, it will continue until 2026. Each year, six photographers are selected. This programme is intended to contribute to renewed representations of urban and social realities in the Greater Paris area.

The fifth edition invited submissions on the theme of distance and received 202 entries, all very different in nature. The selection committee convened on 6 November 2020 and, after careful viewing of the works and extensive debate, six submissions were chosen for their force, coherency, contribution to contemporary photography and unique perspective on life in the Greater Paris area.

The winning artists and projects are :

  • Marie Queau / Field Recording (working title)
  • Assia Labbas / Projet RER B-ANLIEUES
  • Marion Poussier / L’empreinte (working title)
  • Alassan Diawara / Navigo
  • Sylvain Couzinet-Jacques / La Ronde de Nuit
  • Rebecca Topakian / (n=6–9)

Each photographer receives funding and has one year to further investigate his or her idea and produce a work that will enter the Fonds national d’art contemporain collection, which is managed by CNAP. Local residents will have opportunities to take part in the production process, and meet and interact with the artists.

Members of the selection committee were Cathy Bouvard, director of Ateliers Médicis and joint chair; Béatrice Salmon, director of CNAP and joint chair; Jean-Baptiste Gabbero, visual arts consultant, DRAC Île-de-France; Cécile Archambeaud, director of image/imatge art centre, Orthez; Hannah Darabi, artist (Regards du Grand Paris winner in year 2); Mustapha Bouhayati, executive director of Luma Arles; Magali Nachtergael, art critic and curator; Francis Morandini, artist (Regards du Grand Paris winner in year 2) and Yala Kisukidi, philosopher.
