RPBW - Renzo Piano Building Workshop

Au cours des cinquante dernières années, Renzo Piano a remis en question les fondements du métier de l’architecture pour en faire une expérience chorale et participative, où les frontières
entre les disciplines disparaissent et où les actes d’imaginer, de concevoir, de calculer et de construire deviennent partie intégrante d’un seul et même atelier, désormais connu dans le
monde entier sous le nom de Renzo Piano Building Workshop-RPBW.
À travers une sélection de projets de nature, d’échelle et de destination différentes, conçus d’abord par Renzo Piano et puis par RPBW, et grâce à l’utilisation d’une mise en scène simple,
flexible et interactive, l’exposition retrace le « fil rouge » que l’agence a tissé, au fil des ans, entre d’innombrables dessins et maquettes, les échanges avec des spécialistes de toutes les sphères de l’art et de la science, et ce merveilleux laboratoire de fabrication qu’est le chantier. Suivant ce fil rouge, on est confronté à la recherche de la définition d’un espace flexible, ennobli par des jeux de transparences, de perméabilité et de lumière. La recherche du contenant optimal de cet espace a conduit RPBW au défi d’une architecture dépourvue de poids, aux recherches d’optimisation des formes et matériaux et à la décomposition de l’enveloppe en « pièces » uniques et répétables où coexistent haute technologie et objet manufacturé.
Le fil rouge présente une architecture qui devient aussi un dispositif pour la communauté, faisant corps avec la ville et, là où cela fait défaut, aspire à devenir moteur d’urbanité.

Over the last fifty years, Renzo Piano has questioned the fundamentals of architectural practice to make it a participatory and harmonious experience where disciplinary boundaries disappear and the acts of imagining, designing, calculating and building are fused into an atelier now known throughout the world as the Renzo Piano Building Workshop-RPBW.
Through a selection of projects of different nature, scale and intended use, conceived first by Renzo Piano and then by RPBW, and thanks to the use of a simple, flexible and interactive display device, the exhibition traces the “ fil rouge ”, or common thread, that the office has woven over the decades, between drawings and project models, the dialogue with specialists from every sphere of art and science, and that marvellous workshop of making that is the building site. Retracing this thread means going back to the search for an intrinsically flexible space, ennobled by a play of transparencies, permeability and light. The search for the optimal container of this space has led RPBW to the challenge of conceiving a weightless architecture, to the constant optimisation of form and material and to the decomposition of the envelope into unique “ pieces ”, where high technology and craftmanship coexist.
The “ fil rouge ” of the Renzo Piano Building Workshop traces an architecture that transfigures itself into a community device that wants to be at one with the city and, where this is lacking,
aspires to become an engine of urbanity.
