Webscope - Patrice Mortier

Loin du croquis et du travail sur site, Patrice Mortier parcourt le monde depuis son atelier, via le Web, ceci dès la fin des années 1990; baigné dans un flot continu d’informations et d’images médiatiques. 

Parmi ces milliers d’images, et grâce au webscope, un choix s’impose. D’une efficacité visuelle parfois proche du Street art, d’une richesse de composition où les tensions touchent à leur paroxysme, l’image peut également être neutre, a priori dénuée d’intérêt, et ne racontant une histoire que par sa proximité avec d’autres, espace d’apaisement et de décantation quand trop d’émotions se bousculent et s’entrechoquent. 

Patrice Mortier nous interroge sur l’impact des images qu’il sélectionne et ce qu’elles représentent, il les détourne pour en faire un sujet de peinture, passant du paysage à la scène de genre, de la scène de genre à la scène de guerre, une guerre d’images, images d’une guérilla urbaine transposables d’un point à l’autre du globe. Sa peinture ne se veut pas plus politique qu’engagée, elle renvoie la violence banalisée par les médias à un sujet pictural dont les contours vaporeux et incertains interpellent notre regard.

Far from sketches and work on-site, Patrice Mortier traveling arround the world from his studio via the Web, as early as the late 90’s ; bathed in a continuous flow of information and media images.

Among the thousands of images, and through the webscope, a choice is binding on him. In visual efficiency sometimes close to Street art, a wealth of composition where tensions nearing paroxysm, the image can also be neutral, a priori devoid of interest, and telling a story by its proximity with others, soothing and settling space when too many emotions running high and scrambling.

Patrice Mortier raises questions about the impact of the images selected and what they are represented, he turns into a subject of painting, from the landscape to the genre scenes, from the genre scenes to the scene of war, a battle of image, images of an urban warfare be transposed or transferred to any part of the world. He does not want his painting to be more policy that committee, it returns the violence trivialized by the media to a pictorial subject whose misty and uncertain contours challenge our eyes.
