A PICTURE AND ITS PRICE

La galerie est heureuse de présenter la troisième exposition personnelle de Mathew Hale après DER WILLKOMMENE FREMDE (2012) et Tasuk! Tsukku-san! (2007).

À propos de Love is a silver dollar / Bright as a church bell's chime *, peintures de Mathew Hale

Durant la dernière année et demie que j'ai passée à Los Angeles, j'ai réalisé une série de peintures sur des « étiquettes américaines » jaunes. Sur le verso de chacune d'elle, j'ai inscrit, en couleur argent, un prix en dollars américains. Ces peintures sont présentées accrochées à une branche de rosier artificielle.

À Los Angeles, chaque jour, quand je travaillais à l'atelier, j'emportais l'une de ces peintures au mausolée où est enterrée Marilyn Monroe et la photographiais deux fois. Une fois suspendue aux branches du rosier en face du mausolée et l’autre fois à l'extérieur du cimetière, devant le mur arrière qui  longe le  parking du cinéma voisin.

Les tirages de ces deux photographies documentent chaque peinture in situ et font partie intégrante de chacune des œuvres. ** Le titre de chaque œuvre est : Love is a silver dollar / Bright as a church belles chime, suivi de la date à laquelle l'étiquette a été photographiée in situ. Le prix sur l’étiquette est la transcription de la date de la photographie.

J’ai donné comme titre de l’exposition à la galerie Michel Rein : A PICTURE AND ITS PRICE: "… et enfin la précieuse matière du tout petit pan de mur jaune. Ses étourdissements augmentaient; il attachait son regard, comme un enfant à un papillon jaune, qu’il veut saisir, …”***

Mathew Hale (né en 1962 à Swindon, Wiltshire, Royaume Uni, vit et travaille à Berlin) a étudié à la Winchester School of Art and Goldsmith College de Londres.
