Nathaniel Mellors
Pour sa nouvelle exposition, Art : Concept, est heureuse de présenter le travail de Nathaniel Mellors. Ce projet est une collaboration avec la galerie Monitor (Rome) qui représente l’artiste et entre dans le cadre d’un projet d’échange entre les deux galeries.
Né en 1974 à Doncaster (Angleterre), cet artiste qui vit entre Los Angeles et Amsterdam développe un art basé sur la réalisation de films de l’écriture des scénarios aux tournages au cours desquels il s’entoure d’acteurs comme Patrick Kennedy ou David Birkin. A ces films s’ajoute un travail autour de la sculpture ou encore les photogrammes comme c’est le cas dans cette exposition. Ses œuvres sont pleines d’humour, elles sont irrévérencieuses et absurdes parfois, poétiques souvent mais bien que décalées, elles évoquent les thèmes de la possession, de l’histoire et du pouvoir. En utilisant les techniques de la fiction cinématographique, il insère ses œuvres dans un contexte déterminé et ancre son propos dans une réalité sociale qu’il questionne et analyse. Il s’interroge sur nos goûts, notre morale, nos habitudes et autres idées ancrées dans notre mémoire collective.
L’exposition à la galerie s’articule autour du film « The Sophisticated Neanderthal » ; vidéo produite en collaboration avec le Commonwealth Projects et le Hammer Museum et réalisée grâce au soutien de la Fondation Mondrian. Ce film raconte la rencontre entre un jeune homme dit « d’époque contemporaine », à l’accoutrement oscillant entre grenouillère d’enfant et combinaison spatiale, prénommé Truson (un personnage existant dans un autre film de Mellors, Ourhouse, 2010) et un homme de Neandertal. Malgré son pseudo-primitivisme, Neanderthal s’avère être plus intelligent que le jeune homme un peu naïf et se joue de lui ; notamment face aux préjugés et aux attentes de ce dernier quant à l’intelligence censée être limitée de l’homme préhistorique.
For its new show, Art: Concept is glad to present Nathaniel Mellors’s work. This project has been set-up in collaboration with Gallery Monitor (Rome), which represents the artist, and is to be considered as the first of a series of exchange-projects between the two galleries.
Born in 1974 in Doncaster (England), this artist, who lives and works between Los Angeles and Amsterdam, develops an art based on film-making; writing scripts as well as directing and editing them, and working closely with actors such as Patrick Kennedy and David Birkin. To these films, he adds works based on sculpture and photograms, such as the ones that can be seen in this show. His studio works incorporate humor, irreverence, the poetic and the absurd but to address themes of ownership, history, power, morality etc. By drawing inspiration from the techniques linked to cinematographic fictions, he inscribes his work within given contexts of the social reality that he questions and analyzes. He explores our tastes, morality, habits and the various ideas anchored in our collective memory.
The gallery’s exhibition is articulated around the film called “The Sophisticated Neanderthal Interview”; a video produced in collaboration with Commonwealth Projects and the Hammer Museum (Los Angeles) and realized with the support of the Mondrian Fund. The film shows the meeting of a young man (supposedly from the contemporary era) dressed in an outfit that could be described as a crossbreed between a baby’s sleep-suit and space-overalls, whose name is Truson (a character already featured in another one of Mellors’ films from 2010: Ourhouse), and a man of Neanderthal. Despite all his pseudo-primitivism, the man of Neanderthal turns out to be more intelligent and cunning than the rather naïve modern young man, especially with regards to the young man’s expectations in terms of the presumed inferiority of intellect of the prehistoric man.
