Le Duo Mazaccio & Drowilal

Elise Mazac et Robert Drowilal forment depuis 2009, le duo Mazaccio & Drowilal. Leur travail embrasse une profusion d’images en tous genres - glanées dans les médias - qu’ils détournent et combinent en séries à la fois clinquantes et caustiques. Dans notre époque d’addiction aux images et aux réseaux sociaux, l’art conceptuel, la Pictures Generation et le mouvement Réalisme Capitaliste des années 60, contribuent aussi à nourrir leur réflexion. Quand les industries culturelles, sous couvert d’information et de divertissement, distillent une idéologie consumériste façonnant les imaginaires individuels et collectifs, les rêves et les identités contemporaines, M&D n’hésitent pas à altérer les images pour les dévier de leur usage et les charger d’une dimension critique. Avec humour et dérision, ils questionnent ces formes archétypales, déconstruisent les représentations et mettent ainsi en abyme notre manière de regarder le monde. De par leur pratique d’appropriation, ils déjouent la notion d’auteur et relativisent la césure entre professionnel et amateur, original et copie, œuvre et fragment, dans un acte qui articule liberté artistique et hommage à l’histoire autant qu’au présent.

Elise Mazac and Robert Drowilal have worked together as the Mazaccio & Drowilal duo since 2009. Their work explores an abundance of various images – found in the media – which they appropriate and arrange into series that are both glitzy and caustic. In times of widespread addiction to images and social media, conceptual art, Pictures Generation and the Capitalist Realism movement of the 1960s also contribute elements to their reflection. When cultural industries use the pretence of information and entertainment to disseminate a consumerist ideology that shapes individual and collective imaginations, dreams and contemporary identities, M&D do not hesitate to alter images in order to divert them from their original use and to imbue them with a critical dimension. Through humour and derision, they question these archetypal forms, deconstruct representations and in doing so put the way we view the world into perspective. Through their use of appropriation, they subvert the notion of what an author is and blur the gap between professional and amateur, original and copy, work and fragment, in an act that combines artistic freedom and tribute to both history and the present.
