INVENTORY

The photographs that compose the Atelier series are windows that Gautier Deblonde opens on contemporary creation. Each of these photographs tells us a story, his and the artists stories but it also hides from us the rigor of the process that gave rise to it. It all starts with a letter, a letter written by Gautier and addressed to an artist who is dear to him. After the first correspondence, the artist goes to meet the artist. Around noon, when the artist and his team leaves, Gautier takes place in the studio. He steps in with the camera and photographs the empty room, in that curious hole in time, the stasis at the center of the tempest, just after something has happened and just before the next thing

begins. Of these sessions, only one photograph will be kept. One hundred and thirty photographs, one hundred and thirty studios give substance to this series. And yet, when we take a closer look at Gautier's work, we see quickly that it is only the tip of the iceberg. His practice is not limited to this single series. Films and photographs are part of his research on places of creation. He has collected thousands of images, fixed or animated, during his encounters with artists. They are to be discovered or rediscovered by Gautier Deblonde. This exhibition is an opportunity for him to immerse himself in two decades of creation and to draw up an inventory of his work.
