La galerie Florence Loewy présente un ensemble de photographies et de livres d’Erik van der Weijde représentatif d’un corpus hétérogène. L’artiste expose divers clichés photographiques tirés des séries Siedlung, Superquadra, Church Houses, Der Baum, Deer Park, Nelore et Bonsai. Soit la mise en œuvre d’un exercice photographique favorisant l’approche thématique, dont on saisit, lorsqu’on se familiarise avec ce travail, qu’elle n’est pas sa propre fin.
Chez Van der Weijde, l’objet photographié est circonscrit avec rigueur, mais la description sans insistance suggère de ne pas s’appesantir sur sa présence. Le plan général de l’image étant soumis à une précision descriptive égale, c’est le régime de la répétition qui impose le sujet au regard : l’arbre (dans Der Baum), la maison d’un membre du parti nazi (dans Siedlung), l’église (dans Church Houses). Le photographe s’intéresse au lieu, comme l’atteste la liste de légendes dont chaque livre est pourvu, qu’il soit identifié – tel arbre s’élève dans une rue qui abrite l’école primaire jadis fréquentée par Hitler, par exemple - ou pas. La constance thématique favorise cependant la neutralisation du contexte, de son caractère anecdotique, pour constituer chaque image en représentation typologique. L’ordre de la répétition dispose l’objet photographique à un degré d’abstraction. Désinvesti de sa charge symbolique, le motif se décline comme lieu commun.
Cette expérience esthétique de l’ordinaire visuel a trouvé chez Erik van der Weijde sa première destination dans la pratique de l’édition, envisagée comme une collection. Le matériau est hétéroclite, comme le livre prend des formes diverses. La variété des sujets – bestiaire, architecture, scènes de rue… – évite l’écueil de la focalisation sur un thème spécifique. L’intérêt de ce travail en cours réside dans la faculté à rendre générique chaque image : l’image de tel arbre est l’image de tous les arbres ; l’image de tel daim est l’image de tous les daims. Cette exploration des possibilités de construction d’une image et de ses fonctions fait de la recherche de Erik van der Weijde une contribution substantielle à la production photographique et aux pratiques d’édition actuelles.

Van der Weijde carefully circumscribes the photographed object, but the non-emphatic nature of the object's description suggests that we not linger too long on its presence. With the remaining part of the image being described just as precisely, it's the regime of repetition which forces the subject on the viewer: the tree (in Der Baum), the house of a member of the Nazi party (in Siedlung), and the church (in Church Houses). The photographs also concern themselves with the place, as attested to by the list of captions with which each book is furnished, whether it's identified - this tree is growing in a street in which stands the school where Hitler used to go to school, for example - or not. The thematic constancy, however, tends to neutralise the context of its anecdotal character, turning each image into a typological representation. The order of the repetition disposes the photographic object to a degree of abstraction. Devoid of its symbolic meaning, the motif is viewed as commonplace.
Van der Weijde’s aesthetic experience of the visually ordinary found its first contact with the public in published form, envisaged as a collection. The material is motley, with the books taking diverse forms. The variety of subjects - animals, architecture, street scene etc. - avoids the pitfall of focusing on a specific theme. The interest of this still on-going work lies in its ability to render each image generic: the image of this tree is the image of all trees; the image of this deer is the image of all deer. This exploration of the possibilities of image construction and function makes the research of Erik van der Weijde a substantial contribution to photographic production and to current publishing practice.
