Presentation

The Centre National des Arts Plastiques supports publishers for both print and digital projects. This support targets publishing houses and other professional publishing structures, no matter their particular legal status. The CNAP’s funding concerns monographies, anthologies, thematic works, theoretical works, artist’s writings, books designed by artists, catalogues raisonnées, DVDs, digital books and Web projects.

This grant programme supports publications dedicated to living artists, as well as to past artists and art movements postdating the first half of the 20th century whose influence is ever present within the realm of contemporary art.

Through this program, the CNAP affirms its engagement in favor of the French artistic scene: it supports publishing projects produced by structures established in France and, for structures established abroad, whose subjects (artists, collectives, movements...) are dedicated to the French artistic scene.

This funding concerns the following fields: the decorative arts, audio creation, design, graphic design, drawing, printing, engraving, installation creation, new media, painting, performance art, photography, sculpture and video art.

The proposed publication can be bilingual, but must be at least in French.

Eligibility criteria

Publishers may submit two dossiers yearly.
Contemporary art reviews and art criticism reviews are eligible every two years, though not to exceed three obtained grants.

Applications are eligible if:
- The structures do not benefit from recurrent operating grants provided by the French State or by any local or regional authorities, whether French or foreign.
- The projects have not already been submitted to the grant committee, no matter the extent to which they have since been rewritten or modified.
Publishers who have not met their obligations to the CNAP with respect to prior grants may not submit a new request for funding.
- The proposed publications are neither multiples nor numbered works.
- A minimum of 500 copies are to be printed.
- The printed works are not freely distributed.
- The concerned publications have not been printed, distributed or made available online prior to the committee date.
- The artist concerned by the work has not contributed financially to its publication.

Application dossiers are studied by a committee that meets twice yearly and bases its judgements upon the following criteria:
- The interest of the artistic field explored with regard to its period of emergence: the role played by the concerned artist, movement or issue within the realm of contemporary art.
- The references of the author(s).
- The quality of the draft and of the graphic design.
- The historic or theoretic quality of the project.
- The budget’s coherence.
- The remuneration of the authors, graphic artists and collaborators associated with the publication project.
- The means of distribution within France and abroad.
- The project’s artistic and innovative qualities.
