CNAP launches a national commission for prints as part of France’s Year of the Comic Book

In partnership with ADRA and Cité internationale de la bande dessinée et de l'image
Announcement

Responding to an initiative by the Ministry of Culture, the Centre national des arts plastiques (CNAP), in partnership with Association de développement et de recherche sur les artothèques (ADRA) and Cité internationale de la bande dessinée et de l'image, is inviting submissions for a national commission for prints.

Carrying on from previous commissions for prints by the French state, the purpose of this new commission is to recognise and encourage the vitality of contemporary visual arts.

Conditions

This call for proposals is open to visual artists from all disciplines whose work is informed by the visual styles and motifs of comic books and graphic novels. The commission is intended in particular to bring attention to artists experimenting with new forms of expression.

The commission will result in the production of 12 original print multiples (55 copies of each).

Results will be announced on 25 March 2021 on the websites of ADRA, CNAP, Cité internationale de la bande dessinée et de l'image and the Ministry of Culture.

The winners will have until 24 June 2021 to produce and deliver the required number of prints.

Accessioning in national collections

The 55 copies will be allocated as follows:
- 12 copies will join
CNAP’s Fonds national d’art contemporain collection;
- 30 copies will be given to art lending libraries (“artothèques”) across France and managed by ADRA;
- 6 copies will be conserved by the Cité internationale de la bande dessinée et de l'image;
- 6 copies will be kept by the artists;
- 1 copy will be provided to the Bibliothèque nationale de France for legal deposit.
