AT THE DOWN OF METAMORPHOSIS - ART BRUSSELS
PRÉSENTATION DU PROJET CURATORIAL
At the Dawn of Metamorphosis (A l’Aube de la Métamorphose) se présentera comme un passage magnifié entre des mondes, prenant la forme d’une histoire racontée aux collectionneurs et visiteurs de la foire d’art contemporain.
Un chemin dans la forêt
Pénétrant dans l’espace du stand, le visiteur foulera une œuvre du pied, réalisée par Jérôme Zonder pour l’occasion selon une méthode qu’il a déjà mise en œuvre dans des installations dessinées (Qui es-tu Peter ? à l’Espace Culturel Louis Vuitton en 2010 ; Lieu Unique à Nantes en 2013). Il proposera un sol en noir et blanc, véritable trompe l’œil repré- sentant une épaisse forêt peuplée d’arbres, de feuillages et de toute une vie fourmillante. Le visiteur, impliqué physiquement dans l’œuvre, marchera sur un chemin, et ressentira peut-être un certain vertige, sentant l’immensité des arbres se dérobant sous ses pas.
L’éclosion des iris
Lorsque celui-ci lèvera le regard, ce sera pour découvrir, sur les deux murs latéraux du stand, de splendides aquarelles de Patrick Neu : des iris en pleine éclosion que l’artiste décide de peindre tous les ans, au Printemps au moment de leur floraison, depuis le début des années 90, constituant une étrange collection et une réflexion philosophique sur l’éphémère. Les iris ne sont jamais tout à fait les mêmes et deviennent d’étranges figures parées, animales et humaines, au potentiel érotique et charnel diffus.
La métamorphose de la mante religieuse
Enfin, comble de ce voyage quasi initiatique nous amenant d’un univers à l’autre, d’une naissance à un éternel recommencement, le visiteur se dirigera au fond du stand. Et, grâce à un dispositif scénographique (le mur sera peint en noir et l’œuvre mise en valeur) et à un éclairage directionnel théâtral, il s’approchera pour découvrir La Mue descendant un escalier. Nicolas Darrot, avec cette pièce spectaculaire et précieuse faisant référence au Nu descendant un escalier de Duchamp, attire et intrigue : une mue de mante religieuse, telle une chimère enfuie de la forêt des songes, est actionnée par des moteurs, en une danse fantas- tique. Alliant technologie de pointe et archaïsme de la nature, il nous plonge plus que jamais dans un monde de métamorphose.
A travers des œuvres pluridisciplinaires et singulières, ces trois artistes révéleront une nature sauvage et délicate : At the Dawn of Metamor- phosis sera un parcours physique et visuel sous-tendu par la mise en scène d’une constante transformation, à l’aube, à l’instant où la vie s’éveille.
LEA BISMUTH
Léa Bismuth est critique d’art (membre de l’AICA) et commissaire d’exposition (Bruissements, Nouvelles Vagues du Palais de Tokyo, 2013). Elle écrit très régulièrement dans artpress depuis 2006, a également collaboré avec différents supports de presse (L’œil, Le Journal des Arts, La Dispute sur France Culture) et écrit dans des catalogues d’expositions. Elle a récemment été chargée de recherches au Centre Pompidou Metz. Parallèlement, elle s’attache à promouvoir la jeune création (elle a fait partie du Collège critique du Salon de Montrouge ou du comité de sélection du Prix Sciences-Po pour l’art contemporain).

CURATORIAL PROJECT
At the Dawn of Metamorphosis will be presented as a magnified pas- sage between worlds, taking the shape of a story told to collectors and visitors of the contemporary art fair.
A path in the forest
When entering the space of the stand, the visitor will tread upon a work of art created by Jérôme Zonder for the occasion and following a method he has already implemented in drawing installations (Who are you Peter ?) at the Espace Culturel Louis Vuitton, 2010 ; Lieu Unique in Nantes, 2013). He will propose a black and white floor which will be a real trompe-l’oeil depicting a thick forest filled with trees, foliage and swarming life. The visitor will physically be involved in the work of art; they will walk on a path and will perhaps experience some dizziness when feeling the trees giving way under their feet.
The blooming of irises
When visitors look up, they will discover Patrick Neu’s gorgeous water- colours on both lateral walls of the stand: blooming irises that the artist has decided to paint every year in the spring when they blossom. He has done so since the early 90s and they now make up a strange collection as well as a philosophical reflexion on the ephemeral. Irises are never exactly the same and they become strange figures, adorned, animal and human all at once, with a vague potential of eroticism and sensuality.
The metamorphosis of the praying mantis
In the end, the visitor will head towards the back of the stand which will be the height of this almost initiatory trip, taking us from one world to another, from birth to an endless renewal. And thanks to theatrical and directional lights, they will walk closer and discover La Mue descendant un escalier. With this spectacular piece referring to Nude Descending a Staircase by Duchamp, Nicolas Darrot attracts and intrigues: the sloughed skin of a praying mantis is like a buried pipe dream from the forest of dreams and is activated by engines thus creating a fantastic dance. He immerses us more than ever in a world of metamorphosis by combining advanced technology and nature archaism.
Through multidisciplinary and singular works of art, these three artists will reveal nature as wild and delicate: At the Dawn of Metamorphosis will be a physical and visual itinerary underpinned by the mise-en- scene of a constant transformation at dawn, at the very moment of life’s awakening.
LEA BISMUTH
Léa Bismuth is an art critic (member of the AICA) and an exhibition curator (Bruissements, Nouvelles Vagues du Palais de Tokyo, 2013). She has regularly been writing for Artpress since 2006, and has also participated in various press media (L’œil, Le Journal des Arts, La Dispute on France Culture) and she also contributed to exhibition catalogues. Recently she has been in charge of research work in the Centre Pompidou, Metz. Simultaneously, she endeavours to promote young creators (she is part of the Salon de Montrouge’s College of Criticism; she is also part of the selection committee of the Prix Sciences-Po for contemporary art).
