ANARCHEOLOGIES: Hypotheses of a Lost Fragment

Les objets sont souvent de nature fragmentaire. Dans la plupart des cas, ils sont déconnectés de leur passé et de leur contexte ou bien transformés en formes ou figures. Les dispositifs qui les encadrent leur attribuent ainsi des identités auxquelles s’ajoutent des promesses de connaissance. Les archives, collections, catalogues, cartes, et dans un registre plus large, les gestes techniques comprenant le vocabulaire scientifique de l’archéologie, englobent une variété d’objets anciens, d’images et de territoires. Leur infrastructure sont autant invisibles que semblables à des fictions attentivement négociées, à la fois produit et résultat de procédures d’interprétation hautement médiatisées, conduisant enfin à l’invention du sens des objets.

La constellation d’oeuvres proposées dans cette exposition pose la question suivante : qu’advient-il lorsque l’objet-fragment est lui-même perdu ? Privés de leur fonctions usuelles, une carte, une archive, une partition, un catalogue, un portrait, un film, ou encore un voyage à travers le désert, deviennent alors des gestes anarchiques. Chaque pièce propose ici l’hypothèse d’un fragment perdu, qu’elle construit simultanément. L’infrastructure du dispositif même devient un fragment ouvert caractérisé par une opacité, ouvrant ainsi un large champs d’interprétation.

Objects often have a fragmentary nature, in many cases they are torn from their past and their context, are transformed into figures, assigning them with identities and promise of knowledge by the devises that hold them. Archives, collections, catalogues, maps, and in a larger sense technical gestures, including the scientific vocabulary of archaeology, capture a variety of artifacts, images and territories. Their infrastructures are invisible and carefully negotiated fictions, both producing, and the result of, highly mediated procedures of interpretation and ultimately, the invention of the meaning of objects .

The constellation of artworks included in Anarcheologies pose a question: what happens if the object-fragment itself is lost? Deprived from their usual functionality, a map, an archive, a score, a catalogue, a portrait, a film, or a travel through the dessert, become an anarchic gesture. Each work proposes a hypothesis of a lost fragment that it simultaneously constructs. The infrastructure of the apparatus itself becomes a fragment characterized by opacity, open to multiple lines of interpretability.
