« Géraldine Kosiak est diplômée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon en 1995. Depuis la série inaugurale J'ai peur en 1993, elle déploie un enchaînement d'ensembles et sous-ensembles, dessins et photographies réalisés comme autant d'enquêtes intuitives. Les faits et personnages réels – la construction d'une autoroute, son grand-père, la chasse, un ouvrier japonais, des truites, la salle d'une bibliothèque, l'Antarctique – sont représentés avec une minutie qui trahit la précarité de ces réalités contiguës. Sous une apparente harmonie, ses images semblent peuplées de fantômes en devenir. En résulte un plaisir inquiet.
Avant d'être un livre, J'ai peur fut une chose curieuse, exemplaire unique fabriqué à la main, comme peuvent l'être un tableau ou une sculpture. Dans la plus grande discrétion, Géraldine Kosiak réalisa les dessins, écrivit les phrases, puis choisit le papier (bouffant), le format (carré), découpa l'ensemble et le relia, bref, à la fin J'ai peur était devenu un livre.
La plupart de ses projets démarrent à partir d'une phrase, qui devient également le titre de l'objet conçu. Il en va ainsi de Mon grand-père (1998), ou Avec l'âge (2008). Chaque fois, le titre agit comme un panneau indicateur. Il désigne tout à la fois une direction, un parcours, un état, une contrainte ou une posture. Vus sous cet angle, ses titres prédisent l'avenir.
J'ai peur de ceux qui abandonnent leur chien écrivait-elle en 1995. Ses pérégrinations sont celles d'un animal – entre chien et loup – qui parle peu et finit par se fondre dans le décor. Par goût, mais stratégie également, car sa manière nécessite la discrétion. On retrouve ce mode d'observation irraisonnée dans les suites photographiques Monterrey stéréo (2004) et Japon, 206 vues (2006 /2007). Une invention perpétuelle du paysage capturé et le sentiment qu'il nous échappe. » […]

“Géraldine Kosiak graduated from the Lyon School of Fine Arts in 1995. Since her inaugural series J’ai peur, produced in 1993, she has developed a sequence of sets and subsets, drawings and photographs made like so many intuitive investigations. The real facts and characters—the construction of a motorway, her grandfather, hunting, a Japanese worker, trout, a library reading room, the Antarctic—are depicted with a meticulousless which conveys the precarious nature of these contiguous realities. Beneath an apparent harmony, her images seem filled with ghosts in the making. The result is an anxious pleasure.
Before being a book, J’ai peur was an odd thing, a single hand-made copy, the way a picture or a sculpture can be. With the greatest discretion, Géraldine Kosiak made the drawings, wrote the sentences, and then chose the paper (bulky), the format (square), and cut out the whole thing and bound it. In a nutshell, in the end of the day J’ai peur became a book.
Most of her projects start from a sentence, which also becomes the title of the object conceived. This goes for Mon grand-père (1998) and Avec l’âge (2008). In each case, the title acts like a sign. It points out a direction, an itinerary, a state, a constraint and a posture. Seen from this angle, her titles predict the future. I’m afraid of people who abandon their dogs, she wrote in 1995. Her wanderings are those of an animal—somewhere between dog and wolf—who does not talk much and ends up blending in with the décor. A matter of taste, but also strategy, for her manner calls for discretion. We find this method of irrational observation again in the photographic sequences Monterrey stereo (2004) and Japon, 206 vues (2006/2007).
