Photography and Video Commission 2017

April 2017

The Cnap's Consultation Committee met on 25 and 26 April 2017. Allocated a budget of €400,000, the Committee submitted its proposal to acquire 152 photographic prints (composed of nine series, montages or installations) and 15 films, videos and video installations by 23 artists, 15 of whom (65%) are making their debut in the Fonds national d'art contemporain, the national collection administered by the Cnap.

While we pursue an international acquisitions policy, particular attention is afforded to French works to enable a descriptive narrative of the history of French photography within the collection. Furthermore, this year we have achieved full parity between male and female artists.

The Cnap seeks to assemble representative groups of works based on several complementary focuses of research so as to provide a broad, yet accurate, reflection of the diversity of current image production:

- Metaphotography, or research into old and new photographic ontologies coinciding with the paradigm shift from analogue to digital: Philippe Durand, James Welling

- Post-photography: new iconographies and archives: David Brognon & Stéphanie Rollin, Aurélien Froment

- Counter-histories or how to propose the viewing public—within the field of artistic practice, and outside the academic realm or media channels—an alternative understanding of the living conditions that bring them together as a community with a shared history and places: Abounaddara, Lamine Ammar-Khodja, Duncan Campbell, Nir Evron, Salomé Lamas, Jean-Luc Vilmouth

- Images of the world, or how to in inhabit the world poetically and politically through a complete alteration of perspective, a decentring, by drawing on post-colonial studies: Shirley Bruno, Basir Mahmood, Edith Roux, Marie Voignier

- Schizo-geographies, or humankind’s inscription of cultural, economic and symbolic signs in the landscape: Florent Meng, Anne-Charlotte Finel, Estelle Fredet, Randa Maroufi

- Thought images, or how the technological gaze is changing our scopic regimes in both poetic and cognitive ways: Valérie Jouve

- New ecosophies or the artist as an ecosophy, a way to consider the ethical-political connection between the three ecological registers: the environment, social relations and human subjectivity: Philippe Durand, Maria Elvira Escallon, Benoît Fougeirol, Ana Vaz

- Micro-histories, or the process of creating narratives of 'miniscule lives' recounting the present and the singularity of a generation: Valérie Mrejen
