Gigantisme, Art&industry

New triennial in Europe

Friche industrielle de la halle AP2, le Fonds régional d’art contemporain Grand Large – Hauts-de-France (FRAC) et le Lieu d’Art et Action Contemporaine – Musée de France (LAAC)
may 04 2019 • january 05 2020

Starting 4 May 2019, an exhibition of sculptures, designer furniture, films, scale models, paintings and other utopian forms will demonstrate the remarkable creativity resulting from collaborations between artists, architects and engineers since the second half of the 20th century.
The Cnap is a partner of this event, drawing largely from a selection of works belonging to the Fonds National d’Art Contemporain (national collection of contemporary art), managed by the Cnap.

GIGANTISM
In Dunkirk, works drawn from both public and private collections, as well as specially commissioned creations, evoke the meeting and mingling of art and industry. Gigantisme will cover over 4,000 m2, occupying the city’s most important artistic sites: the industrial wasteland of the Halle AP2, the FRAC Grand Large – Hauts-de-France regional contemporary art collection and the LAAC contemporary art museum.

Bringing together a variety of municipal and regional partners, Gigantisme represents an ambitious project meant to be both popular and of the highest standards, thanks to its programme of organized events and activities and its policy of cultural outreach.

Gigantisme merges a visionary outlook, a taste for aesthetic structures and risk-taking for out-of-the-ordinary adventures. By its uniqueness and excessiveness, Gigantisme is meant to surprise. It moves mountains and occasionally stumbles, or bears the brunt of economic transformations, ecological transitions and their social consequences. The stories, projects and diversely scaled productions remain, testifying to its creative and constructive folly. Gigantisme is an outsized triennial, a spirited, future-looking festival of infinite forms.”

Artistic directors:

ART & INDUSTRY
This exhibition will explore the relations between art and industry, by presenting sculptures, designer furniture, films, scale models, paintings and other utopian forms demonstrating the remarkable creativity resulting from collaborations between artists, architects and engineers since the second half of the 20th century. The Halle AP2 industrial wasteland will host outsized works, while questioning reality and the appeal of the grand and great, characteristic of gigantism. The FRAC Grand Large – Hauts-de-France regional contemporary art collection will explore gigantism as applied to the domestic sphere. Finally, the LAAC contemporary art museum of Dunkirk will focus on processes preceding a work’s production, as well as on the influence and echoes of American creation among French artists.
