Visual Arts Acquisitions and Commissions 2017 - Session 2

November 2017

The Consultative Committee for acquisitions and commissions of the Centre national des arts plastiques met in November of 2017. The committee had been provided with a budget of 536,255€ and proposed the acquisition of 48 artworks created by 20 artists.
The Cnap pursued its work of prospection on both the International and French scenes: two thirds of the artists acquired have entered the collection for the first time. This is case for example for France with Neil Beloufa, Jésus Alberto Benitez and Rafaella Della Olga. When it comes to foreign artists, one could mention the acquisition of pieces by Engel Leonardo (Dominican Republic), Faouzi Laatiris (Morocco), Peter Robinson (New-Zealand) and Liz Craft (United States).

The committee was particularly interested in the various contemporary expressions of sculpture: the decorative exuberance of Betty Woodman and the studio work of Stephen Maas, side by side with Sven 't Jolle’s ironic allegory and Francisco Tropa’s game that is both strategic and illusionist. Other artworks possess a strong narrative and performative dimension, like those of Julie Bena, Alex Cecchetti and Kapwani Kiwanga.
Works by Gerald Petit, Ian Kiaer and Vivian Sutter testify to the uneven relevance of the pictorial medium. Rosalind Nashashibi’s sensitive film sheds light on the work of this latter artist.

The films of Étienne Chambaud and Douglas Gordon explore the question of the visible. The first uses digital technologies to adopt a post-human point of view. I had nowhere to go, bears witness to years of war and the exile of artist Jonas Mekas, and provides the spectator with a radical experience.

These artworks are intended to be loaned to, and deposited with, cultural institutions in France and abroad.
