Visual arts acquisitions and commissions 2016 - session 3

December 2016

The Cnap's consultative committee for acquisitions and commissions met in November 2016. The committee had a budget of €471,000 and proposed acquiring 38 works (including three donations) by 28 artists and groups.

Cnap has continued to search for work on the French art scene and internationally, notably acquiring works by artists not already present in the collection (58% new entrants). In a drive to enlarge the monographic content of the collections, Cnap acquired recent works by well-established artists such as François Curlet and Hubert Duprat.

The acquisitions reflect the very close attention paid, as always, to the field of sculpture and art installation. We note, however, in the pictorial field, the addition to the French collections of a painting by the Franco-American artist, Nicole Eisenman.

The works that have been acquired reflect the great interest currently in playing with experimentation and free re-appropriation of traditional techniques (Sylvie Auvray and Scoli Acosta), the fictional imaginary world (Pauline Bastard and Pauline Curnier Jardin) and archaeology of humanity (Michael E. Smith and Olga Balema). The committee also paid attention to the creation of sets able to reflect various aspects of an approach that is part sculpture, part video and so on. (Jacoby, Pisano and Sharif).

Lastly, the committee continued to enhance the collection dedicated to artists’ books, with the acquisition of 3 projects by Charles Sandison , Koo Jeong A and Kris Martin, published by Éditions Yvon Lambert.

The intention is for these works to be sent out on loan to cultural institutions in France and abroad.
