This exhibition at Carré d'Art in Nîmes invites visitors to discover the full range of prints commissioned by Centre national des arts plastiques (Cnap) from contemporary artists. Launched in 2010, Nouvelles Vagues currently assembles 25 large-scale productions. Young artists, representative of the vitality of present-day creation, join leading names in contemporary art whose work already features in the collection.

PRINT ART
Printing is a means for artists to engage with image reproducibility. A print is a medium in the original sense because of its intrinsic connection to the circulation of images and ideas.
By promoting exchanges of expertise and through its support to fine art printers, Nouvelles Vagues carries on the spirit that has motivated State commissions since 1989. It demonstrates the State's wish to support and encourage print studios still in activity. Artists were invited to implement established techniques such as xylography or screen-printing, as well as the most recent such as digital printing. After visiting the studios and choosing a printer, each artist began working in their chosen technique: intaglio, etching, lithography, xylography, screen-printing, stencil, rotogravure or digital printing.
Studios and techniques reflect the diversity and quality of the professional network in Paris and throughout France: Ateliers ITEM (Julien PRÉVIEUX, Patrick TOSANI) and Michael Woolworth Publications (Delphine GIGOUX-MARTIN, Jean HUCLEUX, Émilie PITOISET) for lithography; Ateliers Arcay (Lionel ESTÈVE, Vera MOLNAR, Jean-Luc VERNA), Eric Seydoux (Stéphane DAFFLON, Bernard JOISTEN), Éditions Anaïck Moriceau (Jochen GERNER), Institut Sérigraphique Superheights (Laetitia BÉNAT) and Éric Linard Ateliers (Hippolyte HENTGEN, Gérald PETIT) for screen-printing; Atelier Arte-Adrien Maeght (Gaëlle CHOTARD) and René Tazé (Françoise PÉTROVITCH) for engraving; Studio Franck Bordas (Lauréline GALLIOT, Rafael LAIN and Angela DETANICO, Manuela MARQUES) and Atelier Philippe GUILVARD (Charlotte TANGUY) for digital printing; I-Labo (Pierre SAVATIER) for large-format scanning; Atelier Artebru (Xavier ANTIN) for printing on marbled paper; Atelier POLE C (Clémence SEILLES) for laser cutting; Atelier Hélio'g (Cécile HARTMANN) for rotogravure.

PRINTS IN THE CNAP COLLECTION
Remarkable for its history, which dates back to the French Revolution, the Cnap collection is equally noteworthy for the means by which it adds to its holdings, namely the acquisition and commission of works from living artists, and how these works are shown.
Each work in the Nouvelles Vagues commission is produced in 25 examples. The Fonds national d'art contemporain (which is managed by Cnap) thus acquires large-format multiples as a means to facilitate the circulation of original artworks.
A collection without walls, the works are intended to be shown in museums, decorate public buildings and institutions, or be installed outdoors, thereby interacting with the public on a daily basis. A living, moving collection, it sits at the heart of cultural and artistic life both in and beyond France.
