Photography and Video Commission 2015

The consultative commission of the Centre National des Arts Plastiques met on 23 and 24 June 2015. The committee established a budget of 300 000€ and proposed the acquisition of 50 works (including three donations): 26 photographs and 24 films and videos by 29 artists, of which 19 (or 65%) enter for the first time into the Fonds National d'Art Contemporain, a national collection managed by CNAP. Continuing its prospective policy, the commission is attentive to emerging artists, notably in the French art scene. Parity has been ensured with a ratio of 16 women out of 29 artists.

Endeavouring to take into account the diversity of contemporary practices in photography and the moving image, the commission allowed the acquisition of recent works that are particularly representative of the current dynamic of the international art scene.

Particularly special attention is given to the evolution between still and moving images. Several works articulating photography and video were therefore acquired, confirming the plastic and cognitive richness offered by these movements between images.

The setting in motion of the still image stems from the technological fusion at work in the digital era. The notion of photographic film makes itself felt today. Several significant works of research carried out by artists today have therefore entered the collection.

From fiction to documentary, from “mockumentary” to post-documentary, from autobiographical narrative to situated explorations, from the performative image to its boundless extension, new modes of editing have arisen, to better represent relations which have been established between beings and their environment.

The possibility to write a counter-history of the world from the point of view of artistic  activity outside the academic domain and media channels, is felt through numerous works acquired during this session, to propose to the community of spectators an alternative knowledge of the conditions of life which brings them together around a common history and shared spaces.

These works are intended to be loaned short and long-term to cultural institutions in France and abroad.
