Visual Arts Commission 2014 - 2nd session

The advisory commission of the Centre national des arts plastiques responsible for artwork acquisitions met on 9th October 2014. The committee had a budget of €550,000 and acquired 31 artworks (including for donations) from 17 artists, including 8 who appear in the collection for the first time.

Prospecting for new talent and attentiveness to emerging creative work has remained this commission’s priority as regards the French scene (Ivan Argote, Stéphanie Cherpin, Hsia Fei Chang) and internationally (Santiago Borja, Matthew Darbyshire, Barbara Davi, Jorge Satorre).

The commission also kept a close eye on the new realms of performance art informing today’s sculpture, installation art and cinema.

Moreover, the collection has become richer with emblematic works by artists underrepresented in French collections; these are artists who work on personal or group micro-narrations, mnemonic experience, inventory and classification. The memento mori experience both in terms of its length and form has also remained one of the operating forms.

The artist book collection has also been developed further with singular editorial projects working on critique of the media image and its iconography.

These artworks are meant to be placed on short- and long-term loan in French and foreign cultural institutions; choices have been made to respond to their needs, to make it possible for the larger public to have access to the most ambitious artworks of our time.
