Visual Arts Commission 2014 - 1st session

The advisory commission of the Centre national des arts plastiques responsible for artwork acquisition (painting, sculpture, graphic arts) met on 8 and 9 April 2014. The committee had a budget of €360,000 and acquired 25 artworks from 20 artists, including nine who became part of the collection for the first time.

As it is an “open” commission, two out of three acquisitions were unsolicited proposals from artists and galleries the committee wishes to make priority.

Certain acquisitions were aligned with clearly defined orientations, especially new performance territories (Julien Bismuth and Stephen Felton) or knowledge archaeology (Rometti & Costales and Marco Godhino).

Works by Youcef Korichi and Élodie Lesourd completed a corpus centred on the return of French figurative painting; four acquisitions reinforced monographic groupings created over time or around a single project (documentation on céline duval, Allan MacCollum, Anita Molinero and Éric Duyckaerts).

Commission member proposals tended to concern artists absent from the French public collections (Luis Camnitzer, Sébastien Gouju, Mark Lammert, Su-Mei Tse).

The commission also accepted donation of a John Cornu artwork to be on permanent loan to the Espace d’Art Concret in Mouans-Sartoux.

These artworks are to be on permanent or short-term loan to cultural institutions in France or abroad.
