“Graphic Design: Giving Form to History” Symposium

27 • november 28 2014

The “Graphic Design: Giving Form to History” symposium seeks to contribute to reflection on how graphic design’s specific history came into being.

Some 30 years after the first signs of this new discipline’s existence, should we today stake a claim for graphic design and typography to have their own history? What relations does this specialised historiography maintain with both practices and research in other fields? The programme for the two-day symposium will take these questions for theme.

With the participation of: Gordon Bruce (USA); Christopher Burke (UK); EnsadLab Type (FR); Patricia Falguières (FR); Rémi Jimenes (FR); Olivier Lugon (CH); Rick Poynor (UK); Fred Smeijers (NL); Teal Triggs (UK); Alice Twemlow (USA); Gerard Unger (NL).

The participants, from widely diverse backgrounds, have all contributed to increasing knowledge and understanding in this field. Drawing on their research, they will seek to shed light on these questions.

The symposium will be moderated by Patricia Falguières, historian and EHESS professor.

André Baldinger, graphic artist and ENSAD professor; Catherine de Smet, art historian and Université de Paris 8 professor; and Philippe Millot, graphic artist and ENSAD professor will provide scientific coordination.

The “Graphic Design: Giving Form to History” symposium is co-produced by the Centre national des arts plastiques (the CNAP, or the French National Centre for Visual Arts), the Pompidou Centre, the École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs (ENSAD) and the Labex Arts-H2H – University de Paris 8.  It is presented in connection with the “Graphic Design in France 2014” event.
