« Des coups de pinceau lâches, une forêt se dessine telle une réminiscence, interrompue par une forme indéfinie, aux contours précis. Dans la peinture de David Lefebvre, tout un monde de dualité se joue entre figuration et abstraction, entre touche barbouillée et touche géométrique, entre visible et invisible. La genèse de son travail trouve son inspiration dans des photographies, glanées au hasard sur Internet et plus récemment dans son histoire personnelle, sur lesquelles l'artiste grenoblois vient apposer une forme géométrique, qui délimite une zone de codage. Cette retouche photographique se mue en peinture ou en dessin, desquels émergent des personnages dans des lieux naturels qui contrastent avec un vitrail alvéolé, tendant vers une épuration visuelle purement esthétique. Alors que le regard identifie clairement le décor et la scène, David Lefebvre nous perd avec ces saturations colorées. Ne se satisfaisant pas de l'imagerie du réel, l'artiste tente de peindre l'inconscient par le prisme de polynômes aux camaïeux rouges ou de quadrillages bichromiques. Si l'encodage, auparavant, supplantait un élément de la réalité, aujourd'hui le cryptage a basculé dans l'indéfini total. Dans cette quête du réel invisible, l'artiste ouvre une brèche sur l'interprétation du vrai, crée un interstice dans un espace pictural figuratif permettant à la chose refoulée de se loger : l'affect, les sentiments. Les toiles s'évertuent alors à décrire quelque chose, qui se cache ailleurs, mais sans jamais le montrer. Bien que figuratives, les œuvres de David Lefebvre flirtent donc avec l'abstraction, dans un mélange d'ambigüité tangible sur ce que l'on voit ou pas, sur le désir réprimé qui pourrait tout à coup se manifester aux creux de la tache noire, au milieu du sentier forestier. Un contraste entre une peinture de coulures et une peinture d'aplats géométriques qui permet à l'artiste d'explorer l'imperceptible et d'observer ce qu'il en reste. » […]

“Loose brushstrokes paint the reminiscence of a forest, interrupted by an indefinite, clear-cut shape. David Lefebvre’s painting is that of a dual world, balanced between figuration and abstraction, between smeared and geometric touches, between the visible and the invisible. The inception of his work finds inspiration in photographs that he finds online or, more recently, in his personal life history, onto which he applies a geometrical shape that delineates a coding area. This photographic alteration is converted to painting or drawing, from which characters in natural surroundings emerge, contrasting with a honeycombed stained-glass pattern that tends towards purely aesthetic visual simplicity. Although the setting and scene are clearly identifiable, David Lefebvre confuses us with these added coloured saturations. His dissatisfaction with realistic imagery leads the artist to paint the subconscious through the prism of polynomials in shades of red or bicoloured grids. While encoding was previously used to replace an element of reality, now the encryption has become absolutely indefinable. In his search for an invisible reality, the artist opens up a breach in the interpretation of the truth and creates an aperture in the figurative space of the picture in which to lodge the repressed object: affect and feelings. His paintings seek to describe something that is hidden elsewhere without ever showing it. Although figurative, David Lefebvre’s paintings flirt with abstraction, playing on the tangible ambiguity between what is visible or not, and the repressed desire that could all of a sudden manifest within the black blot in the middle of the forest path. The contrast between streaked painting and geometrical colour blocks enables the artist to explore the imperceptible and observe what is left of it.” […]
